| Task Manager (Shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+Esc) |
|
| The Task Manager is a tool for viewing, managing processes and showing process activity information, besides other features. Processes are identified by the name of the image (or image name: the name of the process, e.g., smss.exe) of which they are an instance. Unlike some objects in Windows, processes cannot be given global names. To display additional information, View>Select Columns, and select additional columns to be added. The applications tab lists the top-level visible windows on all the desktops in the interactive windows station. The Status column indicates whether or not the thread that owns the window is in a Windows message wait state. “Running” means the thread is waiting for windowing input.’ “Not Responding” means the thread is not waiting for windowing input. From the Applications tab it is easy to match a task to the process that owns the thread that owns the task window by right-clicking on the take name and choosing “Go To Process”. |

| Thread |
|
| A thread is the entry within a process that Windows schedules for execution. Without it, the processes program cannot run. The nature of a thread is architecture-specific to the Windows operating system. |

| Track |
|
One of the many thin concentric circles (or bands) that holds/stores data on the hard disk drive’s surface. Consists of a single line of magnetic flux changes and is divided into some number of units of storage of 512-user byte sectors. A hard disk drive contains multiple logically divided platters, and each platter contains many tracks. Track numbers start at 0 and progress in order with track 0 at the outer track of a hard disk drive.
